Responding and Rebuilding After Abuse: H4BF Stands with GBV Actors in Bamenda

Today, Hope for a Better Future (H4BF) stood alongside other local and international actors, including UN agencies, at Up Station, Bamenda to launch the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women and Girls. This year’s powerful theme, “Responding and Rebuilding After the Abuse,” serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing fight to empower survivors and create a safer, more equitable society.

At H4BF, we understand that empowerment goes beyond just providing support—it’s about creating opportunities that enable women and girls to rebuild their lives with dignity and independence. Through entrepreneurship and renewable energy programs, H4BF is helping survivors regain control over their futures, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive despite the challenges they face.

The 16 Days of Activism: Why It Matters

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign that begins on November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and ends on December 10th (Human Rights Day). This period is a crucial time to reflect on the deep-rooted causes of gender-based violence (GBV) and to take collective action to address them.

Violence against women and girls remains a pervasive issue in Cameroon and many parts of the world. According to UN Women, 1 in 3 women worldwide experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. The North West Region of Cameroon has faced increased cases of GBV due to the ongoing conflict and instability, making the need for effective responses more urgent than ever.

By participating in the 16 Days of Activism, H4BF aims to amplify the voices of survivors, raise awareness about GBV, and highlight the critical need for sustained action and support.

Empowering Women Through Entrepreneurship, Renewable Energy, IT, and Sustainable Fashion

H4BF believes that economic empowerment is a powerful tool in breaking the cycle of abuse and helping survivors rebuild their lives. That’s why our programs focus on providing women and girls with practical skills and resources to achieve financial independence.

    1. Entrepreneurship Training

H4BF offers training programs that equip women with the skills to start and manage small businesses. These programs cover areas such as:

    • Financial literacy and budgeting
    • Business planning and management
    • Access to microloans and startup capital

Through these initiatives, women gain the confidence and ability to generate income, reducing their dependency on abusive partners or unsafe environments.

    2. Renewable Energy Solutions

Access to clean energy is transformative for women and girls in rural and crisis-affected regions. H4BF’s Clean Energy for All Project has already established 7 solar solution centers in Donga Mantung and Magba. These centers provide women with:

    • Solar lamps and cookstoves
    • Training on solar panel installation and maintenance
    • Opportunities to work in the growing renewable energy sector

This not only reduces household energy costs but also creates new income streams and job opportunities for women.

    3. IT and Digital Skills

H4BF recognizes the growing importance of digital literacy in creating sustainable career opportunities. We train women and girls in:

    • Web and app design and development
    • Machine learning
    • Data analysis

Equipping women with these skills helps them secure well-paying jobs in the digital economy and opens doors to remote work and freelance opportunities, increasing their financial independence.

    4. Sustainable Fashion and Design

The fashion industry is a significant source of income for women in many communities. H4BF trains women in:

    • Eco-friendly textile production
    • Sustainable clothing design
    • Marketing and brand building

This allows women to create and market their own clothing lines using environmentally friendly materials, promoting both economic independence and environmental sustainability.

    5. Skills in Agriculture and Sustainable Development

H4BF’s bio-demonstration farm offers training in sustainable agricultural practices, giving women the knowledge and tools to improve food security and generate income. The skills gained in farming and renewable energy empower women to lead in rebuilding their communities.

Local Voices: Why This Work Matters

“After the abuse, I felt lost. H4BF’s training in solar installation gave me purpose and financial independence. Now, I can provide for my children and help my community.”Esther, GBV Survivor and Entrepreneur

Local leaders have also recognized the importance of empowering women through economic opportunities. According to a local government representative:
“Economic independence is key in breaking the cycle of abuse. H4BF’s programs give women the tools they need to stand on their own.”

    Challenges and Opportunities

While progress has been made, challenges remain. The ongoing conflict in the North West Region makes it difficult to reach some communities and ensure consistent support. However, H4BF is committed to working with local partners, government agencies, and international organizations to expand its reach and strengthen support systems for survivors.
