    History and background of H4BF

    Our Story

Hope for a Better Future (H4BF) was founded on the visionary leadership and deep commitment to community development of Ngo Abdulai Banfogha. From an early age, Ngo demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities and a strong desire to foster positive change within his community. His passion for organizing social events such as football tournaments and music groups reflected his innate ability to bring people together and create opportunities for collective growth and empowerment.

Ngo’s engagement in community work intensified during his years in secondary school, where he actively participated in local development initiatives, solidifying his commitment to improving the lives of those around him. After completing his education, he pursued a career in Information Technology (IT). However, he soon realized that his true potential and aspirations extended beyond the technical domain. He felt a profound calling to serve his community more directly and meaningfully. This realization led him to transition from IT into the development sector, where he could channel his skills and leadership toward addressing social and economic challenges at the grassroots level.

In 2009, Ngo founded H4BF as a simplified cooperative with a focus on identifying, producing, processing, and marketing agricultural products. The cooperative was established to support rural farmers in improving production, accessing markets, and increasing their incomes through enhanced agricultural practices. The initiative quickly gained momentum, empowering local farmers to adopt innovative techniques and benefit from collective marketing strategies.

Recognizing the growing need to scale its impact and broaden its scope, H4BF transitioned into a charitable association in 2014 and was formally registered under the Cameroon Government with Ref No: 65/E.29/1111/VOL.8/ALPAS. This transformation marked a significant milestone, expanding H4BF’s mandate beyond agriculture to encompass a wider range of development programs, including health, education, gender equality, clean energy access, and economic empowerment. Between 2009 and 2016, H4BF operated primarily as a development-focused organization, implementing targeted programs aimed at enhancing livelihoods, improving food security, and addressing basic needs in rural communities across Cameroon.

The year 2017 marked a critical turning point for H4BF as the socio-political crisis in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon escalated, resulting in widespread displacement and humanitarian need. In response, H4BF adapted its strategic approach to address the emerging humanitarian crisis. The organization expanded its programming to include emergency relief, protection, and livelihood restoration for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other vulnerable populations.

H4BF’s capacity to respond effectively to the crisis was strengthened through strategic partnerships with key United Nations agencies and international NGOs. The organization became an active member of several critical humanitarian coordination mechanisms, including:

These collaborations enabled H4BF to launch specialized programs in child protection, GBV prevention and response, food security, and livelihood support. Through these partnerships, H4BF aligned its humanitarian interventions with internationally recognized standards, ensuring that its programs were both effective and sustainable.

    Global Recognition and Expansion

In November 2020, H4BF attained special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), providing the organization with a platform to engage in global policy discussions and contribute to shaping international development priorities. In December 2020, H4BF became a member of the NGO Committee on Social Development with the United Nations, further enhancing its influence and capacity to drive systemic change.

Today, H4BF continues to expand its reach and deepen its impact, focusing on four core areas of intervention:

Its projects have positively impacted over 400,000 people across Cameroon, demonstrating the organization’s capacity to deliver high-impact, sustainable solutions at scale.

Looking ahead, H4BF is poised to expand its reach and deepen its impact. The organization is actively raising funds to establish additional solar solution centers, scale its economic empowerment programs, and strengthen its capacity to respond to emerging humanitarian and development challenges.

H4BF’s journey from a local cooperative to a globally recognized development and humanitarian organization is a testament to the power of vision, adaptability, and community-driven solutions. Its story reflects not only the resilience and strength of the communities it serves but also the unwavering commitment of its leadership and staff to building a future where vulnerable people have the power to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive.
